 Maajid Nawaz - 2nd March

Maajid was a teenager growing up in Essex when he first became involved with extreme Islamism, joining political organisation Hizb ut-Tahir, which seeks to establish an Islamic state across the Middle East. Nawaz entered the spotlight when as part of a compulsory university year abroad he travelled to Egypt and was jailed in Alexandria in 2002 with two others for belonging to a radical Islamic group. His time in prison acted as a catalyst for his departure from Hizb ut-Tahir and extremism.

Having turned away from radical Islam, he will be talking about

The struggle of ideas: challenging extremism in Pakistan and Britain’.
