Durham IV 2008
Durham IV 2008
This year's Durham IV takes place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November, just one month before WUDC in Cork.
The Durham IV has a reputation for excellence, in terms of the quality of motions and debates, its organisational smoothness and the enjoyability of our social events. This year promises more of the same, all set around the stunning splendour of Durham's World Heritage Site, with its Norman Castle and Cathedral.
We are stll inviting institutions to register for this competition, however places are now running low so we encourage anyone yet to do so to register soon. The competition team cap is 56, with an institutional cap of 3. We ask all institutions to comply with the n-1 rule, to ensure a diverse pool of judges. Registration costs 45 pounds per team (SSDC arrangements apply- please contact us for more details.)
The competition will consist of 5 rounds of closed motions, breaking to Semi-Finals. The Final will take place in the Durham Union Society's debating chamber, between the castle and cathedral on Palace Green.
Registration is from 11am until 12:00pm on Saturday 29th November, followed by 3 rounds of debating and our main social event: pizza, beer and our increasingly famous yakka. Sunday's schedule involves 2 more rounds, Semi-Finals and the Final, and should finish around 5:30pm.
Crash is in the traditional IV style: on sofas and floors, with the added Durham twist of sleeping under a snooker table for overflow (this is right above our bar, which means minimal drunken meandering back to someone's house after the social.) We will be asking institutions to provide numbers for crash closer to the date.
If there's anything missing from these pages, please contact us at durhamdebate@gmail.com. A more definitive timetable will be up soon.
