Friday Night Debates
Friday Nights are the centre of the union society and form the backbone of any term.
Each Friday night the Union holds a debate on the issue of the day, such as 'This House would ban the hunting of foxes with dogs'. We invite two external speakers, each an expert in their field, to speak on each side. For example in the fox hunting debate above we hosted Lucy Higginson, Editor of 'Horse and Hound', George Bowyer, master of the Fitzwilliam hunt, Kate Hoey MP and Lynee Edwards from the League against cruel sports. After the main speeches we then give members the opportunity to speak, if they wish, then we hold a vote and head to the bar.

Every Friday night, the Union brings leading public figures, celebrities and experts to Durham to argue highly relevant issues. Only at the Union will you see Labour minister and Tory shadow, convinced atheist and committed Christian, unionist and nationalist, homosexual and homophobe meet face to face.
Your Fridays will be packed with passionate argument and real intellectual debate. You will only find this at the Union.
