Monday Night Workshops

Speaking in public might sound intimidating at first, especially if you have never done it before, but debating is a fun and useful skill to learn. 75% of Durham students leave with a First or a 2:1 – debating is a fantastic way to acquire, develop and improve skills that employers really value and will set you apart.

If you would like the chance to learn British Parliamentary style debating, to increase your public speaking skills or simply to have fun, The Union has an extensive programme of workshops that cater for all, regardless of past experience.

The Union’s workshops are held every Monday evening at 7.00pm in the Elvet Riverside lecture theatres (ER140). Our experienced debating squad will give demonstrations and explanations, and offer advice on developing your talent.

Whether you have spoken at school or not, all members are welcome. If you would like to represent The Union in a competitive environment you will be given the opportunity to enter tournaments through these workshops.

For more on Debating at University read our introductory guide to debating here.

As a reflection of the quality of The Union’s training programme, we hold three internal competitions. Every Michaelmas term the Freshers’ Cup is contested by our newest talented speakers; the Epiphany Inter-Collegiate Cup displays the best debaters from each college, and each Easter, the prestigious Robson Cup determines the best individual speaker in the University.
