European Debating Championship 2009:
For most of our members, the summer holidays brought a much needed break from the strenuous nature university life, but for fourteen students the work was by no means over. Five teams and four judges were sent to the European Universities Debating Championships held in the exotic location of Newcastle University during August. The Championships once again provided a great development opportunity for our novice debaters who excelled under the immense pressure, but the front page story of the week was Durham's rise back to the top flights of international debating. After a slow start to year on the debating circuit, our top three teams built on the success seen at the end of Epiphany and throughout Epiphany by all finishing in the top 40 of nearly 200 teams. Calum Jones (St. Cuthbert’s Society)and Tom Ball (University College) led the way by finishing 6th in Europe with Tom Ball also finishing 15th individually. So after a summer of great results, Durham now looks to continue this success in Michaelmas 2009. If you would like to get involved, please contact Tournament Secretary Jon Worgan.p>
Summer Garden Party:
On 11th June, 60 members gathered in 24 for the social highlight of the Easter term, the Bacchanalian Garden Party. The reading room and bar were transformed with ivy, bunting and lights into the perfect setting for an afternoon of Classical hedonism. Guests were treated to a professional barbecue and summery drinks from Pimm’s to G&Ts, accompanied by some excellent jazz. Despite some slightly changeable weather conditions, the bouncy castle proved very popular. Our blazers and summer dresses seemed more appropriate later in the afternoon when the sunshine returned. All present had a wonderful time, and we hope you will join us for one of our choice of socials next term.
