The Exec

The Union is run by student officers, who are unpaid and try to squeeze in degrees at the same time!

William Day - President

president@dus.org.uk

The President is in charge of delivering a successful term. They chair debates, meetings, and coordinate the action of the Union Officers. The President is ultimately responsible for the Durham Union Society, both to its trustees and critically to you, its members. It is important however to note that the motions do not necessarily reflect the opinions of either the President or the Union Society executive.

Will is a second year historian at St. Cuthbert's Society. The little time he spends outside the Union Society, he spends avoiding the library by singing in the chapel choir at St. Chad's and dancing badly in Klute. If he could improve Durham in any way whatsoever, it would be to introduce some proper Somerset Cider to the college bars.

Louise Best - Secretary:

The Secretary is the administrative hub of the Union. The Secretary is responsible for communicating the members’ views to the other officers, recording the minutes of the debates and meetings, changes in the Constitution and has ultimate responsibility for the college secretaries.

Louise is a second year natural scientist at St. Chad's College. Hailing from the industrial heartland of Birmingham, “Stella”’s other role in charge of Chad’s wine cellar means the Union is always well stocked.

Anna Birley - Treasurer:

The Treasurer is in charge of the money! The Treasurer liaises with the responsible officers and sets budgets. They are the check and balance on spending, and keep the accounts up to date before presenting them to the trustees.

Anna is a second year PPE student at Josephine Butler College, which she claims isn't in Darlington. She enjoys travelling to obscure and dangerous places, which she claims are not obscure or dangerous. She is from Dorset, which she claims is not rubbish.

Tom McCall Custodian.

The Custodian is responsible for 24 North Bailey Club. Working with the assistant treasurer and bar stewards they ensure the smooth running of 24, and communicate all resolutions from the officers to the stewards.

Tom reads history and is a second year at Trevelyan College. A proud Welshman, and often reminded of the fact, he lives next to Domino’s and has seen The Subways play three times.

Joanna Crawford - Social Secretary:

The Social Secretary is responsible for delivering all of the Union’s fantastic social events that are held each term. They are supported in their role by the social committee.

Joanna is a finalist, studying history at St. John's College. As self-titled "Queen of Scotland", her social events are always glamorous and reflect the best of Scottish banter.

Toby ElectedSponsorship Secretary

The Sponsorship Secretary works closely with all of the other officers to ensure that all areas of the Union receive sponsorship. Responsible for making and maintaining links between the Union and external parties.

Toby is one of those guys you can't really say much about. He probably likes long walks in the country, good food and stuff.

Calum Jones - Tournament Secretary

debating@dus.org.uk

The Tournament Secretary is responsible for student debating, both inside and outside of Durham. Day to day tasks include running Monday Night Workshops and Advanced Debating Practice, selecting teams to represent Durham at Inter-Varsity competitions, and organising competitions such as Durham Schools, the Open and our own IV.

Calum is in his second year at St. Cuthbert's Society and studies a bit of everything. He does not enjoy the outdoors, and is not "bubbly". If you know a good joke, he probably knew it first. This has led him to believe he is hilarious. He is wrong.
